University of New England - Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT) & Interprofessional Education Collaborative
UMedGym is proud to have partnered with the University of New England Doctor of Physical Therapy program since 2012. Born out of the need to provide physical therapy students with community programming experience, we were able to build our Parkinson's Program from the ground up with the assistance of both students and faculty at UNE. This program has become our signature offering and has now progressed to a Movement Disorder Program supporting members with Essential Tremors, Atypical Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy. In 2013, our facility expanded their partnership to the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) at UNE which provides students from UNE's 13 different health professions programs come to better understand the roles of of the health care team and develop skills to work more effectively to improve quality, safety and patient-centered care. It is through this growing partnership that many meaningful programs and studies have immersed to benefit both members of our community and team based interprofessional learning. Early research has indicated significant health benefits from this type of exercise. In December, U.N.E. students presented the study outcomes and feasibility of sustaining the program. Although a new tandem bicycle session has not yet been scheduled in our Research and Design facility, we share the opinion of the study participants and believe in the value of this program and plan to continue offering the tandem bicycle and have even purchased a 2nd bike for team sessions.
Parkinson's Disease and Forced Exercise in a Community Setting: A Feasibility Study
In the fall of 2014, the University of New England and UMedGym partnered in a tandem bicycle research project. Members of the UMedGym Parkinson’s disease (PD) exercise class volunteered to ride on the back of a specially designed tandem bicycle twice a week, for 1 hour each session. Healthy riders, or “captains,” volunteered to pedal the front of the bicycle. The study assessed the feasibility of using tandem bicycle exercise to help PD patients move more freely and with fewer symptoms.
InterMed : Exercise Is Medicine for Pre-Diabetes
InterMed is a physician-owned medical group founded on the goals of patient centered primary care that is enhanced by integrated specialty services. Their staff focuses on putting the patient first to deliver high quality, high value care while their mission is to form partnerships with other organizations to benefit their patients.
InterMed has embodied this mission in their ongoing partnership with UMedGym. The collaboration between InterMed and the UMedGym embodies all that needs to occur for improved patient satisfaction, better outcomes, and healthier communities!
Upon receiving a grant from Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare under Exercise Is Medicine, InterMed engaged in discussions to determine how UMedGym could best serve their goals in this Preventative Treatment Program for Pre-diabetics. To date, over 100 InterMed patients have gone through this multidisciplinary program comprised of InterMed Physicians and Care Managers, Nutrition Works and UMedGym exercise programs.
UMedGym and InterMed continue to discuss future partnerships that can serve a greater portion of their patient needs such as Hypertensives, Diabetics, and Childhood Obesity. In fact, UMedGym most recently began offering Empoyee Wellness Programming for InterMed Employees to include walking maps for all of their clinic campuses, SAFE 6 exercise flip charts, and Risk Reduction Education.

The Sports Health Alliance
The Sports Health Alliance (SHA) was developed out of the need to provide young athletes and families in our communities the opportunity to collaborate their care, become well informed about return to sport processes and most importantly, prevent injuries through high level training. This alliance is formed out a partnership between 3 organizations: MaineOrtho, SacoBay Physical Therapy, & UMedGym.
Services and benefits from each of the 3 organizations are blended intoone program by which we work together to improve and maintain the health of our athletes. From working with local schools to elite club teams, the success our relationship has allowed young athletes to see opportunities they never dreamed of. Although currently just a Maine based alliance, it is our goal to continue to grow this partnership into other communities around the country.

As a weight-loss and pain management practice, Anew10 provides their patient's with expert nutritional and weight-loss strategy, support, and counseling that are fundamental to surgical success. With improved physical fitness, nutritional status, and 10% weight reduction, prehabilitation patients are likely to experience more post-operative success than those with poor baseline health. We provide our patients comprehensive education, advanced support, and one-on-one counseling that are the keys to understanding and maintaining their health. UMedGym is excited to partner with Anew10 to assist in collaborating care and integrating our exercise prescription services to better support patients pre-surgical conditioning and post-surgical rehab. In addition to joint pain, many patients also suffer from co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. Our programs not only address surgical issues, but also how to best manage other risk factors through exercise.
UMedGym and Anew10 will be launching a pilot program in the summer of 2015 investigating the cost benefits of Prehab for bariatric patients.

Commonly refered to as "Prehab," this program is specially designed for people preparing for a joint (e.g. knee, hip) replacement or back surgery. It is a pre-operative strategic process that prepares patients for successful operations and reduced post-operative stress.
